Design and Symbolism
The national flag of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, as defined in the 2004 Constitution, consists of a vertical tricolor with the classical national emblem in the center. The flag is black, red, and green, with a width-to-length ratio of 1:2.
The black stripe represents the past, the red stripe represents the blood shed by Afghan martyrs, and the green stripe represents hope for the future. The national emblem, which is placed in the center of the flag, consists of a white mosque with a mihrab and a minaret, surrounded by a wreath of wheat. The mosque represents the Islamic faith, while the wreath of wheat represents agriculture, Afghanistan's main industry.
History
Afghanistan has had a number of different flags throughout its history, reflecting the country's changing political and military alliances. The current flag was adopted in 2004, after the fall of the Taliban regime.
The flag of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the Taliban-led government that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, was a plain white flag with the shahada, or Islamic declaration of faith, inscribed in black.
International Recognition
